“The goalkeeper was the favourite” – Gary Neville blasts Alvaro Morata for wastefulness against Arsenal
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has lashed out at Alvaro Morata for lacking the killer instinct against Arsenal on Wednesday.
Chelsea ended up drawing the game 2-2 after errors in the opposition box, especially those clear chances that fell to Morata. He was one-on-one twice with Petr Cech and still failed to get on the score sheet, leaving scoring duties to Eden Hazard and left full back Marcos Alonso.
The former Real Madrid and Juventus forward has scored 10 Premier League goals this season, but chances wasted means he has spurned the opportunity to rub shoulders with star forwards this season such as Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah.
His profligacy will cost Chelsea a major title or two this season, if his form does not improve and Antonio Conte should be left fuming at the end of the season. The top four positions were up for grasp on Wednesday when to of the top six clubs faced each other at the Emirates stadium, and yet, Chelsea with the most chances, failed to find the back of the net more than their rivals.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says the Premier League champions’ problem was Morata.
“The story for Chelsea will be Morata. There were three big, big chances. There were two one-one-ones with the goalkeeper and I always think you can miss those, of course you can, they are difficult and you have a lot of time to think. The conviction, the purpose and the intent of knowing what you are going to do… it hasn’t quite happened. When you think about Thierry Henry, when he used to take one-on-ones he was always the favourite. When Morata was going through on goal tonight, you thought the goalkeeper was the favourite.”
