The 27-year-old, who was part of the backbone of the Foxes’ 2015/16 Premier League title-winning squad, requested to depart King Power Stadium after interest from the Blues.
And while against losing one of their star midfielders, Leicester eventually agreed to allow Drinkwater to leave shortly before the close of the transfer window on Thursday night.
"I'm delighted to be a Chelsea player and can't wait to get started," said Drinkwater.
"It has been a long journey to get here but I am very happy and am looking forward to helping the club win more trophies."
Chelsea also signed defender Davide Zappacosta from Torino on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
